Learn how to care for your fence during the winter.

November is officially here which means winter weather is coming our way shortly with snow and hail potentially damaging your landscaping features.  It is critical that you go through the proper procedures to ensure your fence lasts throughout the winter and into the spring.  Regardless of the material of your fence, without proper maintenance, it is at risk for weather damage during the winter.  There few simple ways to care for your fence right now, so it stands up well through a harsh winter season.

Remove Any Plants

If you have a wooden fence, it is vital that you remove any plants that grow around and could potentially wrap around your fence.  You should remove overgrown plants as soon as possible because they can damage your fence incredibly.  Once a large plant grows around your wooden fence, it can transfer moisture into the panel causing it to rot and warp.  The last thing you want is your fence covered in plants and rotting underneath all of them.

Wash and Seal

Mold and mildew tend to grow on wooden fences, so it is vital that you wash them off as soon as you notice them.  Before winter arrives, you should pressure wash your fence to get rid of harmful debris or mold that could damage your fence.  After you fence is washed and clean, you should apply a layer of sealant to protect your fence from winter moisture.  Staining and sealing your fence is the most effective way to protect your fence from winter weather.

Clean Metal Fences

Although metal and aluminum fences require little care to maintain, you should still clean and wash your fence occasionally.  It is critical that you remove any rust spots by scrubbing with a wire brush.  Once all of the rust is removed, you should repaint your fence with a rust-resistant brand of paint.
