5 Annuals to Plant in Fall

5 Annuals to Plant in Fall

Ready to plant some fall annuals? Here are several you might not have thought about!

As summer begins to transition into fall, you don’t have to give up on all those summer colors just yet. Indeed, bright, fresh flowers can go strong throughout the fall, and one of the best ways to implement those colors is through planting annuals. Edward’s Lawn & Home has one article listing five fall flowering plants here that list a few plants typical for the season; in this post, we will cover five more annuals to plant in fall that are slightly more unusual.

1. Petunia

Petunias are almost as prevalent in garden beds as pansies, but make just as showy a garden bed. One should plant them in masses for the best effect. Petunias require full sun and a soil pH of 5.5-6.0, and fertilizer or compost won’t hurt. Different types of petunias include Grandiflora, Multiflora, Milliflora, and Wave. Among these categories are quite a range of types and colors.

2. Snapdragon

The snapdragon is a species that is part of the Antirrhinum family, a plant family that has flowers that resemble the face of a dragon. This conical, multi-floral plant can grow up to four feet tall, depending on the variety. It is a cool season plant that does best in full or partial sun.

3. Begonia

Begonias are bright, bold, and hardy annuals. One can have begonia blooms throughout the fall, but it is recommended to preserve them indoors over the winter to ensure that they flower again next spring. One can bring potted begonias indoors and save the tubers of in-ground plants.

4. Nasturtium

Nasturtiums love cool weather and one can have great success with them when you plant in the fall. Come spring, you can enjoy a mass of lilypad-like leaves and bold, cheerful little blooms, and once again into the fall and into a mild winter. Nasturtium does well in full sun with well-drained soil. If you have a pergola or trellis to cover, this species is one excellent choice.

5. Dianthus

If you are looking for a low-maintenance ground cover with delightful flowers with jagged edges, Dianthus could be the plant species for your garden. Dianthus can be perennial, biennial, or annual. They like to flower during spring and fall and require at least six hours of full sunlight. For more annuals to plant in fall, talk with Edward’s Lawn & Home!
