It’s time to start fertilizing your lawn! The best time to fertilize is around mid-April, so if you haven’t done the first feeding yet, now is the time. What The Numbers Mean
When you buy a bag of fertilizer, you will see three numbers on the label. These numbers are very important, as they indicate the percentages of nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium- the primary nutrients needed to keep your lawn healthy. A 20-5-10 mixture is a good basic mixture for spring, which is 20 percent nitrogen, 5 percent phosphate, and 10 percent potassium. The remaining percent of the bag contains a filler material that helps make an even application.
Five Applications
The ideal time to give your lawn its first feeding of fertilizer is when the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees- typically around mid to late April. Once you’ve completed the first feeding, be sure to wait about four weeks, or until mid-May. Then, you want to complete three more applications every six to eight weeks until the end of October.
Water
Keep in mind that the more you water your lawn, the more fertilizer it will need. If you use an automatic sprinkler system to water your grass, you should be fertilizing your lawn about every six weeks. Without a sprinkler system, you can wait about eight weeks between feedings
Also, be sure to read the label on your fertilizer before starting, as it will tell you to ether water the lawn before or after applying it. Granulated fertilizers need water to break down, while others required the grass to be wet first.
Clean Up
After applying the fertilizer, you may see some straw granules on your sidewalk, driveway, or patio. It’s important to sweep the excess fertilizer up, as it will cause extra pollution if you let it be. The granules can get washed away into storm drains, and may end up in rivers or lakes. Help the environment by taking a few extra minutes to clean up the fertilizer once you have finished.
