You are likely very familiar with weeds in your lawn and garden, as they are a common challenge for most homeowners. Even the best gardeners who maintain their landscape all year long may deal with persistent weeds. However, there are a few ways to reduce and control weeds in your garden, and it starts in early spring. Continue reading for a few tips on how to control and remove weeds in your lawn this season.

Desirable Plants

When controlling weeds in your landscape, the most important element is to promote the best environment for the growth of desirable plants. This requires landscape maintenance, including a proper watering schedule, enough sunlight, drainage, fertilization, and more. Mowing the grass at the appropriate height will also help to reduce weed problems in your lawn.

Removing Weeds

There are a few methods for removing weeds, including by hand or with the use of herbicides. Removing unwanted plants by hands or gardening tools is the safest and most environmentally-friendly way to control weeds. Be sure to remove a weed as soon as you notice it by lifting it close to the base, and lifting out as much root as possible.

While this method is the most eco-friendly, it is not the most practical for large lawns with many weeds. You may need to resort to using herbicides, which can be very effective if used correctly. It’s essential to be careful and handle the powerful chemicals safely, and follow the instructions on the label carefully.

Weed Control Schedule

All lawn care maintenance has a schedule based on the time of year it is, and weed control is no different. You should start the process in early spring, which is right around the corner. Inspect your lawn as spring approaches to decide on the type of treatment your landscape needs. If you’re using herbicide, you should apply a pre-emergent shortly before annual weeds begin to grow in the spring. You can also choose to use a pre-emergent combined with fertilizer as an early treatment.

Late spring is typically the middle of the growing season and is time to determine which weeds have come back and need additional treatment. You will need to decide if you want to repeat weed killer application or to select which weeds to remove with herbicide or by hand.
