Tips To Keep Your Garden Growing All Summer Long

Fall Planting

Check out these essential tips to keep your garden growing all summer.

It is now officially the start of summer! As the temperature will only getting hotter through July and August, it’s crucial to maintain your garden to keep it growing all summer long. The hot and humid weather can quickly lead to wilting plants if they don’t get enough care, so take a look at these tips to ensure your garden stays healthy this summer.

Water In The Morning

While it may be difficult to wake up early on the weekends or before work on the weekdays, the morning is the best time to water your garden. We know how hot the afternoon sun gets in Maryland, and your plants will wilt in the sunshine even when the soil is moist. Check on your plants when it is less humid in the morning, and water deeply if they look wilted. Also, wet plants leaves encourage disease, so it’s best to use your sprinkler system in the early morning while the leaves are already wet with dew. This allows the plants to dry early in the day and reduce the risk of disease.

Pull Weeds

If you love to garden, you know it can come with a few drawbacks such as pulling weeds. Weeds are strong and compete with your plants for water, so it’s essential to pull them out of your garden before they take over. As you are watering your garden early in the morning, make sure you are also checking for weeds every day.

Pick Ripe Fruit

If you are growing fruits and vegetables this summer, it’s vital to pick them as soon as they are ripe in the hot weather. Ripe fruit needs more water from plants, so it’s best to pick them as often as possible to avoid draining water from the plant. Similarly, damaged fruit should be removed just as often, as they will still soak up water from the plant even when damaged.
