Consider these tips before adding trees to your landscape.

As the weather warms up and summer approaches, maintaining your landscape is probably at the top of your list when it comes to maintenance chores. Perhaps you want to add something new to your landscape to spice it up a little bit this year. When considering landscape design and curb appeal, trees can really help. By choosing the right type of tree, putting it in the right place, and taking care of it, you can increase your home’s curb appeal. By the same token, if you choose the wrong tree or put it in the wrong place, you can destroy the landscape design you worked so hard on. Keep reading to find out how to pick the best tree for your yard!

The Best Tree

Trees can add shade to your patio and color and interest to an otherwise dull landscape. Deciding on the purpose of the tree can help you to narrow down what species you should go with. For example, fruit trees and Japanese Maple trees are popular for those who want to add some interest and color to your yard. If you are looking for shade, go with a tree that has a wide canopy.  If you want to muffle sounds and increase privacy, consider arborvitaes. If you plan to plant near a pool or a roof, remember that some trees are messier than others. If this is the case, avoid plants that flower or drop seed pods- an evergreen is a great choice!

It is also important to consider how much room you have, and growth obstacles, and water access. After all, your tree will be on your property for a long time, so it is of the utmost importance that you consider how it will grow in the future.

When You Should Plant

Once you have chosen which type of tree you want to plant in your yard, you next need to determine when to plant it. It is best to plant trees when they are dormant. This is either in the fall after their leaves have dropped or early in the spring before leaf buds appear. You can plant trees any time of year, however, keep in mind that extra care, more watering, or more mulching might be needed to help your tree along.
