Why and How to Aerate Your Lawn

lawn aeration

Lawn aeration is a major part of spring landscaping, so start planning now.

As the weather begins to warm, flowers start to poke out, and hems get shorter, it’s clear that spring is on the way! Lawn aeration is a major part of spring landscaping, so start planning now. Here is the lowdown on why you should put lawn aeration on your to-do list and how you should get the job done.

Aeration 101

Aeration is the process of perforating the soil in your yard so that air, water, and nutrients can have better access to the roots of the grass. Aeration is a simple way to help grass roots grow deeper and thereby give you a stronger and more durable lawn. Over the course of the year, soil gets compacted and puts a lot of pressure on any roots. Compacted soil has a great amount of soil in a small amount of space, so air, water, and minerals cannot get to things below the surface.  The best time to aerate your lawn is during the growing season, so in the early spring or early fall periods.

Does Your Lawn Need to be Aerated?

Your lawn could use aeration if:

  • It is frequently used by children, pets, or frequently walked or jogged across
  • It was installed as part of your new home in a new development, since topsoil is normally compacted during the home finishing process
  • It dries out frequently
  • It feels spongy when you walk across it or press down
  • It was established with sod so soil layering is present

How to Aerate Your Lawn

To aerate your lawn:

  • Make sure that your soil is moist, so wait until after a rainstorm or water your lawn the previous day
  • Make many passes over areas of your lawn that are particularly compacted
  • Let the plugs you dug up dry and then break them up across the surface of your lawn
  • Continue doing your regular lawn maintenance and landscaping routine and fertilizing, mowing, and watering
