Creating a Three Season Garden

Creating a Three Season Garden

Edward’s Lawn & Home can help you have a colorful garden spring through fall.

A garden is a place to enjoy nature and all its abundant variety, but very often, our gardens only have color in the spring and summer. We hardly expect to see any flower in the fall besides chrysanthemums. The truth is, any landscape can enjoy a rich blooming cycle throughout all three seasons. Here is a simple outline for creating a three season garden.

Design

Your three season garden will be thick with foliage and need little maintenance. Today, one can choose exotic plants for the plot, including hyacinth and rose, but one also has an extensive list of beautiful native plants that are adapted to Maryland’s conditions. A variety of color within one color scheme is best, with not too many similar or same colors clumped together. Height is also a factor; you’ll want the taller plants in the back and low-growing ones up front. You can create a focal point by adding a taller perennial or evergreen to the back center of the plot.

Process

Gardening can be both laborious and relaxing. In summary, making your design a reality begins with upheaving the soil and getting rid of any weeds and rocks present. It is basically tilling the ground, so your plants or seeds have an oxygenated, nutrient-filled place to settle. Next, outline where you want to put everything to mark where you will dig. If you plan to have a raised garden bed, you’ll need retaining materials and extra soil. Then, place your plants into the ground, and wait for spring to come.

Species Sampling

Below are several species that might be great for a three season garden in Maryland, and is by no means an exhaustive list.

  • Hyacinths
  • Candytuft

Summer

DIY or Professional Landscaper?

If you enjoy digging in the dirt, upturning the earthworms, and handling the plants, then this would be a fulfilling DIY project to do. It will also be helpful if you have an eye for design, having a sure idea for where to arrange each species and color.

On the other hand, a professional landscaper can help you avoid mistakes a hobbyist gardener might make and save you much time and energy in working the soil. Edward’s Lawn & Home has both modern landscaping design and installation services to help you make a stunning three season garden.
