Clean, Aerate, and Feed
The first step of cleaning your yard for the fall is to remove any debris you may see. This includes leaves, grass clippings, and branches. Fallen leaves are perfect places for creepy-crawlies to hide, so bag them up and throw them out! Make sure you also clean out your flower beds to keep them in tip-top condition.
Once you have cleaned up your yard, it is time to aerate. Aerating your soil and grass will ensure that nutrients will be able to penetrate to the plant roots during the long, cold winter. As far as flower beds go, you can till the soil with a garden fork. For larger yards, consider renting a walk-behind aerator for maximum results with minimum effort.
After aerating, it is time to feed your lawn. It needs specific nutrients to survive through winter. Add a fall lawn fertilizer with a high phosphorus content in order to encourage root growth to ensure a lush, green lawn once springtime rolls back around.

Most people do not consider mowing their lawns at the end of the fall. The winter is coming anyway, so why should you? However, it is actually a very important step to freshly mow your lawn before the first snow of the season. It will ensure that by the time the snow melts, your yard will dry out quickly in time for spring.
