How To Protect Your Outdoor Kitchen From Winter Weather

Outdoor Kitchens

Learn how to protect your outdoor kitchen from winter weather.

More and more homeowners are taking advantage of their landscape features and investing in outdoor kitchens.  Although, if you have the luxury of cooking in an outdoor kitchen, you need to know how to take care of it once winter comes around.  The last thing you want is snow or hail damaging your kitchen appliances such as your refrigerator.  Luckily, there are a few simple ways to protect your outdoor kitchen from winter weather.

Start With The Water Lines

When preparing your outdoor kitchen for the winter, you need to shut off all of your water lines that connect your outdoor kitchen to indoor plumbing.  You should use an indoor shutoff valve because it will not freeze compared to an outdoor valve.  You then need to drain all water lines especially those connected to refrigerators, sinks, and ice makers.  Make sure to leave the drain lines open all winter long to prevent water from freezing.

Clean and Shut Off Appliances

It is critical that you turn off all electrical power units and leave them unplugged throughout the winter.  You then should clean out appliances such as your refrigerator and grill and remove all food items.  Clean your appliances with mild soap and water and make sure you remove all dirt and debris.  Leave your refrigerator and ice maker uncovered during the winter to avoid trapping moisture and damaging your appliances.

Protect Your Cabinets

Depending on the material of your cabinets, it is critical that you go through the proper steps to protect them from winter weather.  If you have wooden cabinets, you should oil and seal them to prevent harsh weather from damaging them severely.  If you have stainless steel cabinets, all you have to do is coat them with a layer of polish.
