Water Early and Late
When watering your lawn, it is best to do so in the early morning and in the evening. If you water in midday, the sun could heat up the newly sprinkled water and cook the grass roots! Under the hot summer sun, the moist soil gets hot. Therefore, it’s better to wait for these cooler times of day.
Water Just Enough
How do you know whether you are watering too little or too much? You don’t have to worry about this too much if you know how much to water in the first place. The rule of thumb? It’s about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week. If it is raining that week, you don’t need to put out the sprinkler. Also, if your lawn is in the shade, it will need less water than a sunny lawn.
Water Long Enough
How often should you water the lawn? On a normal week with no rain, you might set the automatic sprinkler to 2-3 times per week for 20-30 minutes. A good way to know if this is really the right time frame is to put out an empty tuna can on the lawn. When it’s full, that will be your 1 inch of water for the week.
Avoid Watering in Excess
You might be watering enough, but make sure that as little of it goes to waste as possible. As much as possible, avoid letting the water spray on trees, fences, siding, sidewalks, and driveways.
