Healthy & Lush
Anyone with a properly planted lawn is going to want it to grow thick and lush when the season is right. After all, why put in all that work measuring, seeding, and watering if you never get to reap the benefits? One of the most important routines to establish to reach your landscaping goals is your mowing routine. If you allow the grass grow too long, then you invite all kinds of creatures into your yard to set up shop. Grass that is too short is likely to suffer heat damage from the sun and be overrun by weeds. Once a week is a common rule of thumb, but every lawn is different and you have to keep an eye on how fast the grass grows.
Grass Species
If you are new to lawn care, this may not be a completely obvious factor, but there are different optimal lengths for different types of grass. In Maryland, we have warm-season grasses and cool-season grasses, and these are suited for different environments. Cool-season grass may thrive at .75in like Kentucky bluegrass, or it may want to climb to 4in like fine fescue. Warm-season grasses can be healthy as .5in if it’s a Bermuda variety, but St. Augustine grass does great at 2in.
If you know that your lawn’s species are mixed in with each other, then you can most likely keep it at about two and a half inches. This happy medium will allow for enough growth that it shades itself, but not so much that unwanted life starts to thrive.
(Tip: If you don’t want to find the tape measure every time you think you need to mow, mark a spot on your lawnmower that indicates the right height. When the grass seems tall, wheel out your mower and check it against the mark.)
